Histopathology of experimental ethambutol intoxication

چکیده
Ethambutol {the dextro isomer of 2,2'-(ethylenediimino)di-l-butanol) is widely used for the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. Like all drugs it may produce undesirable side effects, the most notable being amblyopia. Instances of impaired vision were recognized shortly after the racemic form of the drug was introduced, but detailed case histories were not published until Carr and Henkind described toxic amblyopia in a man treated with the drug. Subsequently it was shown that although most of the therapeutic effect resided in the dextro isomer, the levo isomer possessed most of the toxicity. As a result ethambutol is now used only in the dextro form. Despite that, and limitation of dosage, cases of visual impairment due to ethambutol continue to be reported. In the only histopathological study of the brain and eye of such a patient there was demyelination in the optic chiasm. Studies of ethambutol intoxication in animals have also shown that lesions may occur in the optic chiasm.' ° Stimulated by these observations, I investigated the effect of ethambutol intoxication in the anterior visual system of the albino rat.

Cystone, a well-known herbal formulation improves renal function in rats with acute renal failure (ARF) induced by Glycerol intoxication
The present study was aimed to evaluate the beneficial effect of Cystone syrup in an experimental model of glycerol-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rats. Biochemical parameters, kidney weight and histopathological evaluation were performed to conclude the beneficial effect of Cystone syrup. Administration of single dose of 50% v/v glycerol (8ml/kg.i.m) caused severe renal dysfunction assoc...
متن کاملFormate-induced inhibition of photoreceptor function in methanol intoxication.
Formic acid is the toxic metabolite responsible for the retinal and optic nerve toxicity produced in methanol intoxication. Previous studies in our laboratory have documented formate-induced retinal dysfunction and histopathology in a rodent model of methanol intoxication. The present studies define the time and concentration dependence of formate-induced retinal toxicity in methanol-intoxicate...
متن کاملEffect of Antituberculosis Regimen Containing Ethambutol on Serum magnesium Level in Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients
Magnesium is an essential metal that has important roles in physiological function of the body organs. Ethambutol is an oral antitubercular agent with chelating effects owing to its chemical structure. The aim of present study is to determine whether ethambutol usage can alter serum magnesium concentration in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Sixty patients with diagnosis of pulmonary tuber...

The present study reports on the detailed toxicological and chemotherapeutic evaluation of antituberculosis drug loaded nanoparticles in mice. A single oral dose administration of poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLG, a synthetic polymer) nanoparticles containing rifampicin+isoniazid+pyrazinamide+ethambutol could maintain drug levels in various tissues for 9-10 days and did not elicit any adverse re...
